AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference and Which Does My Business Need?
Short answer: SEO (search engine optimisation) helps your pages rank in Google and Bing so people click through. AEO (answer engine optimisation) is about being mentioned or cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and voice assistants. On Google they share the same foundations. ChatGPT leans more on sources beyond your own website. Most small businesses need both, in the right order.

Someone's told you SEO is dead and now you need AEO. Before you spend a cent, hang on. It's one of the questions we hear most at BeAutomated AI, and the honest answer is less dramatic than the sales pitches suggest.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It's the work of getting your pages to show up in search engines like Google and Bing, so people see your link and click through to your site. It covers things like making your site easy to crawl, fast on a phone, and full of pages that clearly answer what customers search for.
What is AEO?
AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. Instead of aiming for a blue link, the aim is to be part of the answer when someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode, or a voice assistant a question.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
You'll also hear GEO, or generative engine optimisation. For a small business, it's close enough to the same idea with a different label. Most people use the two terms interchangeably.
Why it matters now
Google itself says "people are increasingly gravitating to generative AI experiences to help them find information" (Google Search Central). And when an AI tool answers a question like "best plumber near me", it often names just a handful of businesses rather than showing ten links.
The three real differences between AEO and SEO
It comes down to three things: the goal, where you show up, and how you measure it.
- The goal. With SEO the goal is a ranking and a click. Someone searches, sees your link, and visits your site. With AEO the goal is to be mentioned or cited inside the answer itself. Sometimes people click through; often they just read the answer.
- Where you show up. SEO puts you in a list of results. AEO puts you inside a written summary, alongside a few other names and sources.
- How you measure it. SEO gives you rankings and clicks. AI answers have no stable ranking at all. In a January 2026 study by SparkToro and Gumshoe, 600 volunteers ran the same prompts 2,961 times across AI tools, and the same list of brands came up less than once in a hundred runs (SparkToro).

Is AEO part of SEO?
On Google, mostly, yes. In May 2026 Google published a guide on optimising for its AI features, and it puts it plainly: "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google Search Central).
A few practical points from Google's own documentation:
- To appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in normal search with a snippet. There are no extra requirements (AI features and your website).
- You don't need special AI files or special schema for Google, and you can skip "chunking" your content into tiny pieces.
- Google says valuable, non-commodity content (things only you can share) will likely influence your presence in AI search more than any shortcut.
Why ChatGPT and Google don't pick businesses the same way
The engine matters more than the acronym.
- Google AI Overviews. Ahrefs found that about 76% of pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in Google's top 10 (July 2025). Their March 2026 update put it closer to 38%, which they put down to "query fan-out": Google runs lots of related searches behind the scenes and pulls from those too (Ahrefs).
- ChatGPT. In Ahrefs' August 2025 research, only about 8% of URLs cited by ChatGPT ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt (Ahrefs).
So ChatGPT often leans on sources beyond your own website: reviews, directories, forums and articles written by other people. Strong Google rankings help, but they're not the whole picture for ChatGPT.

Which one does your business need? A simple six-step plan
Honestly, both, in the right order.
- Get the SEO basics right. Make sure Google can crawl and index your site, and that it works well on a phone.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current. Google says it can help you show up in AI responses as well as regular results.
- Give each main service its own page. Answer the questions customers really ask, in plain words, near the top of the page.
- Share what only you know. Real jobs, real lessons, real examples. That's the non-commodity content Google talks about.
- Earn genuine mentions away from your own site. Reviews, local directories and being helpful in community groups. Never fake it.
- Don't block OpenAI's search crawler. Check your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot. If it's blocked, you won't appear in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI).

How do you know if it's working?
- Google: start with Google Search Console, which is free. Its Generative AI performance report shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Search Console Help).
- ChatGPT: ask the same handful of customer questions every month, a few times each. Track how often you're mentioned, not what position you're in, because there's no stable number one.

Three questions to ask before you pay anyone for AEO
Yes, even if it's us.
- What will you do that's different from good SEO?
- How will you measure it, month to month?
- Are you promising a number one spot in ChatGPT? If so, be careful. There's no stable number one.
The honest truth
AEO isn't a magic shortcut, and SEO isn't dead. Nobody can promise an AI tool will name your business. But clear, helpful, consistent information gives Google and AI tools more reasons to trust you. Same foundations, different finish line.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results so people click through. AEO aims to get your business mentioned or cited inside AI answers from tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. They share foundations, but differ in the goal, where you appear and how you measure it.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Google says optimising for its AI search features is still SEO, and AI Overviews and AI Mode only use pages that are indexed and eligible for normal search. Good SEO remains the foundation for AEO.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
For a small business, effectively yes. GEO means generative engine optimisation, and most people use it interchangeably with AEO to describe showing up in AI-generated answers.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI Overviews?
Google says you don't need special AI text files or special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Focus on an indexed, helpful site and accurate business information instead.
Why does ChatGPT recommend different businesses than Google?
ChatGPT often draws on sources beyond Google's top results, such as reviews, directories, forums and third-party articles. Ahrefs found only about 8% of URLs cited by ChatGPT ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt.
How do I measure AEO results?
For Google, use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. For ChatGPT, ask the same customer questions every month, several times each, and track how often your business is mentioned rather than its position.
Can anyone promise my business will appear in ChatGPT?
Nobody can promise that. AI answers vary from run to run, and there is no stable number one. Be wary of anyone promising a top spot.
